Your Instagram Bio is super important. It’s your first impression and that impression has only a few seconds to land you a new follower.

When someone opts to click on your name and check out your page, they’re curious. They want to see who you are and what you’re all about. This is your chance to hook them with your smarkling smile, personality and essence of your brand.

Your Instagram bio is your best opportunity to turn a random Instagram user into a loyal follower, client and friend.

That’s a lot of pressure for only 150 characters, isn’t it?

Don’t worry, with these tips, you’ll be able to write the best bio for Instagram to impress anyone who lands on your page. Plus, if you need in-depth help to see real growth on Instagram, you should pick up my comprehensive Instagram Growth Hack PDF which is 59 pages of pure IG goodies just waiting for you.

Elements of a Great Instagram Bio

A good Instagram bio shows off your personality. You can do this in a number of ways, like putting a cute quote there, a bunch of emojis that relate to you or by straight up telling people who you are.

That’s a good Instagram bio. But we’re not shooting for good, we’re going for great.

A great Instagram bio draws in your tribe. They have no choice but to smash that follow button because they’ve found their peeps.

How do you write a great Instagram bio? Well, first, you should be aware of everything that can happen in your bio. Your Instagram bio can include all of the following:
  • Your name
  • Your location
  • About you
  • Hashtags
  • Mentions
  • Emojis
  • Profile link

How to Write a Great Bio for Instagram

Now that you know all the elements that can possibly be part of your IG bio, you can put it all together to create an impressive first impression.

A great bio is clear, concise and to the point. A potential follower should immediately know who you are and what you're about when they look at your profile. They should be able to see what’s in it for them if they follow you and know what to expect from your posts. If you’re looking to build your Instagram followers, here’s an extensive list of growth hacks to try out.

Optimize Your Name Field

Start by putting what it is that you do in the name field. Your Instagram bio is limited to 150 characters so this is an ingenious way to put some of your info in the name field, instead of just utilizing it for your government or your brand name.

This could look something like:

Jane Brown | The Amazing Copywriter

Tom Snaps * Wedding Photographer

Mary Sue ~ Caribbean Travel Expert

Vintage Dawn - Pristine Vintage Dresses

You get the idea. Take the time to insert a little personality in there if space allows. Use an emoji between your name and what is it that you do.

Break Up Text with Line Breaks or Emojis

Keep your bio short and spicy and easy on the eyes by using line breaks or emojis to emphasize points or show off your personality.

A big block of text will do nothing but send potential followers scrambling so the formatting of your bio is important here to provide a visually appealing experience.

Consider replacing some words with emojis, adding dashes and slashes in between points or creating line breaks altogether to break up the text.

End your bio with a strong call to action to increase your followers or drive traffic to your website. This means telling people exactly what to do, don’t leave them to guess what’s the next step.

This might look like telling them to follow for actionable tips on *insert expertise here* or to click the link below to download your latest free offering.

Add Hashtags and Mentions to Increase Discoverability

This step serves double duty as it helps to increase your reach and will also help to brand your page and claim your assets.

You’ll want to add a branded hashtag in your bio to encourage followers to use that hashtag and so that you’ll be found when that tag is searched.

You can also add a super targeted hashtag to help increase your reach. If you’re a graphic designer based in NYC, you want to be discovered if someone is searching for #nycdesigner for instance.

Choose one tightly targeted hashtag to dominate and include that tag in your bio. Remember, space is limited so don’t go crazy with hashtags here.

If you have other IG accounts, you can also include them in your bio to let people know and drive traffic to those other pages. These are just a few of the ways you can boost your Instagram visibility. Check out more growth hacks here

Make the Best Use of Your Bio Link

If you have a website, blog, podcast, newsletter, Youtube channel or some other digital asset, you’ll want to add the link to that asset in your bio.

But what if you have all of those and more?

This is where a link in bio tool will come in handy. Such a tool will create a landing page with multiple links so that you can drive traffic to multiple links at once.

Some tools will recreate your Instagram feed making each image clickable which is super cool since IG doesn’t allow clickable links in captions.

Some tools that offer link in bio landing pages include:
  • LinkIt from Planoly
  • LinkinBio
  • LinkTree
  • Smart.Bio from Tailwind
You can also create a custom landing page on your own website with your most important links and add this link to your IG bio so that you’re driving traffic back to your own website always instead of using a third-party tool.
This allows you to keep a branded experience on your bio with your name, your hashtags and your link.

Fill Out Your User Profile Completely

Go into your account settings and make sure your user profile is filled out with everything that’s relevant. If you have a brick and mortar, then fill out the telephone number, the email address, the physical location and any other contact information.
This activates the buttons on your profile that can help generate clicks to your website and shop. This also leaves more space for fun bio content since you’ll want to make sure you’re not duplicating content anywhere in your bio. You really want to maximize this space to capture your target audience.
Once you’ve taken care of all these steps in your Instagram bio, you’re well on your way to increasing reach, followers and growth on the platform.

January 20, 2026
It was March 2020. The world shut down. We were all home, trying to teach our children math at the kitchen table. Conferences canceled. Networking events gone. The constant hum of business travel—silent. The world stood still. But I couldn't. When Everything Stopped, I Started I longed to talk about branding and marketing. Not the surface-level stuff. The real work. The decisions. The pressure. The thinking that happens before the campaign ever goes live. Because here's what most people miss: You need a brand before you can market. So I started The CMO Brief . Not because I had a business plan. Not because I saw a gap in the market. But because I needed to keep doing what I do best….unpacking the strategy behind the campaigns everyone else just admires. And something unexpected happened. Within months, it grew to 4,000 subscribers. Chief Marketing Officers from all over the world started showing up on LinkedIn every week to discuss brands and their campaigns. Real conversations. Real stakes. Real expertise. We weren't just celebrating creatives. We were studying decisions aka signals. Then I Walked Away When the world opened back up, I made a choice. I paused The CMO Brief . I wanted to go back to what was comfortable. Back to consulting. Back to the known. And I did. I've had the liberty of working with Fortune 500 companies, RCA Records, Home Depot, DeWalt, Apple, Berkshire Hathaway, Dunkin', United Airlines, and more. I’ve run a successful multi million dollar digital marketing agency that has paid me an annual salary over $450,000 and I am doing what I love…..building brands. But here's the truth: I'm overworked. I'm underpaid for the value I create. And the newsletter kept calling my name. More than that the community I built kept calling me. The Decision That Terrifies Me I've decided to go all in on The CMO Brief . I can't believe I'm saying it. I'm scared and excited all at the same time. My mentor Bob Proctor always told me that I was created for more than what I was accepting. He also told me, “if your goal doesn’t scare you and excite you all at the same time, you have the WRONG goal. So I must have the right goal because I am ready. I've spent years being the person in the room where money is on the line. I've been inside boardrooms where a single decision could make or break a quarter. I've seen what survives legal, what earns the CFO's nod, what holds up in the debrief. And I realized: I don't just want to build brands. I want to build my own. What The CMO Brief Really Is Let me be clear about what this is and what it isn't. We don't study trends. We study decisions…SIGNALS. That's the difference between marketing that looks smart and marketing that is smart. When we see an ad, we don't say "cool." We ask: What pressure was this team under? What were they protecting? What were they risking? That's what real strategy looks like. Most newsletters explain what happened. We explain why it was allowed. That's the real story. Because good marketing looks fun. Great marketing survives the boardroom. It clears legal. It earns the CFO's nod. It holds up in the debrief. We explain how it got there. This Isn't a Swipe File. It's a Strategy File. You're not reading The CMO Brief to be inspired. You're reading it to sharpen your judgment before your next big decision. Every campaign we break down was a high-stakes decision. Budget. Risk. Reputation. We don't just admire the outcome. We unpack the pressure behind it. That's how you get better at your own. You don't need a Super Bowl budget to use a Super Bowl idea. We break down billion-dollar campaigns so you can use the thinking behind them—not just the headlines they made. We don't tell you what to post. We show you how the best campaigns are architected—so you can think like the people who built them. Why I'm Doing This (Even Though It Scares Me) Marketing isn't magic. It's a decision chain. Most people celebrate the ad. We study the approval. Because great marketing isn't about creativity—it's about who said yes, and why. I've been on the consulting side. I've helped build some of the most recognizable brands in the world. I've been paid extremely well to do it. But at the end of the day, I was building their equity. Not mine. And the truth is: CMOs don't chase attention. They manage risk, timing, and narrative. That's what I'm doing now. I'm managing my own risk. I'm choosing my own timing. I'm controlling my own narrative. I'm not just a consultant anymore. I'm a founder. A publisher. A builder. I am Jayme Washington. And I'm betting on myself. What Comes Next The CMO Brief is back. Not as a side project. Not as a hobby. As the thing I'm building. Every Thursday at 7am ET, I'm breaking down the campaigns that matter. The strategic decisions behind them. The frameworks you can use. The thinking that separates good marketing from great marketing. Not because it's comfortable. Because it's what I'm meant to do. And if you're a CMO, a VP of Marketing, a founder, or a CEO who knows that better marketing starts with better thinking—I'm building this for you. Because you don't need more creative ideas. You need better thinking about which ideas to back. That's what we write for. Welcome back. Let's build something that lasts.

Whether we accept it or not, Instagram does not exist to serve us. They are here to earn profit and they will continue to do so as long as they want it.
